Canada’s National Post has published a macabre, yet engrossing illustration of the practice of punitive stoning in Iran. The illustration accompanied an in-depth article on the fate of Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani, a mother of two sentenced to die by being bound, half-buried in the dirt and pelted with rocks against her head. The practice, hotly debated both inside and outside of Iran, has been subjected to a moratorium by the Iranian government, yet is still given as a sentence to adulterers by local judges.
What it is — Illustration & Text
Who made it — Adam McDowell, Asmahan Giarrib, Jonathon Rivait, Richard Johnson/National Post
Reminds us of — Daniel Clowes’ graphic novel, Ghost World. What does it remind you of?
We liked — You can say a lot – and get away with a lot – in illustration. The news-reading public may be averse to images of violence against women generally, but the dry presentation of this piece makes the shock of thinking about stoning more palatable, and yet more real.
